Small is Beautiful
Tuesday, June 01, 2010
In the 18th & 19th centuries Dutch art collectors had a snug or cabinet room in their homes assigned for displaying small paintings.
The cabinet room is where the collector would entertain his fellow connoisseurs for an evening of art appreciation. Small works could be examined closely and passed from one to another for critical appraisal.
A small painting has to be perfect to have an impact.
The artist must achieve a satisfactory visual whole by using his compositional skills. This and harmony of colour create a work of beauty.
Large paintings impress the viewer by their sheer size, the artist working on a small scale has to be more subtle and lead us into appreciation of the work by his technical skill.
During the month of June the gallery will be exhibiting a collection of cabinet paintings. This will include a group of 19th century oils and watercolours alongside work by established contemporary artists.
