Born in 1915, John Pawle has been painting all his life. He studied at the Westminster School of Art before the war but it was not until he retired from the City in 1979 that he was able to devote himself to painting full time. Since then he has had a series of successful exhibitions with his paintings being acquired by an ever growing list of private and corporate collectors.
John Pawle is the only non Scottish artist to be included in the collection of Robert Fleming Holdings Ltd. The chairman, John Manser CBE states ‘ John’s paintings, whether landscape or still life, have the same quality of colour and sheer fun as paintings by Fergusson, Redpath or Morrocco.
When I bought the painting John asked me why I had chosen Promenade. I told him it reminded me of Morecambe ‘ prom` on a typical cold blustery day. He had never visited Morecambe or anywhere on the North West coastline but offered to write a dedication on the reverse of the painting.
